On a recent business trip I was startled awake in the middle of the night by loud banging on the ceiling in my room.  Five thunderous booms shook my room and, after I caught my breath and scrambled to turn on the lights, five more booms followed.  Still, I waited to call the front desk, worried that I was being a nuisance. And when I did call, I started the conversation with “I’m so sorry to bother you…” Why was I apologizing for the room’s poor sound insulation when I was the one scared out of my wits at 1 am?
